Beginning tonight, drivers are advised that the Cowichan River (Silver) Bridge in Duncan is being cleaned and painted to ensure the bridge’s long-term stability and safety.
Work on the southbound bridge is scheduled to take place nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. During this time, one or both southbound lanes may be closed. If both lanes are closed, a detour will be set up to divert single-lane traffic to the adjacent northbound bridge.
During the daytime higher-traffic periods, two lanes will remain open on the southbound and northbound bridges. Pedestrians will be able to cross the river on the northbound bridge sidewalk.
Applying new paint will add many years of useful service to the structure as well as improve the overall appearance of the bridge. Earlier this year, the bridge underwent seismic upgrades.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
Drivers are reminded to obey the construction zone speed limit of 30 km/h for worker and public safety.
The ministry will ensure delays related to construction are minimal and provide regular updates to travel advisories.
